Vocal Fitness Workshop

From opera to folk music, proper vocal technique will help you sound your best and avoid vocal injury.

  • Getting the most out of practice and rehearsals

Diversity at Sea in the Great Age of Sail

At first glance one might think that people of color rode only as cargo aboard the mighty sailing ships of the 18th and 19th centuries when in fact maritime history is full of color.  Come listen, sing, and learn about Diversity at Sea through stories and songs.
Participants will learn about:
  • Sailors and their life at sea
  • Who were these sailors?
  • Where did they come from?
  • Why did they sing?
  • What did they sing about?
  • Sea chanteys and their musical and lyrical origins

Introduction to Sea Chanteys

Beyond "Drunken sailor" and "Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum" there lies a vast assortment of songs of the sea that can be sung by anyone for work or play.  Amuse your friends with an anatomical progression chantey!  Keep the kids entertained in the car with a capstan chantey!  Find the perfect song for a chantey sing or an open mic!  Make up your own lyrics and become a songwriter!  Come learn chanteys for all occasions.

  • Overview of how chanteys were and still are used for work and play
  • Introduction to the repertoire with sing a longs and recordings
  • Examples of how songs have evolved into many different versions
  • Tips and tricks for researching lyrics and finding chantey songs
  • Recommended listening and reading list provided

You may feel that you just aren't good at getting up in front of people and talking about what you do.  You may think that people who can present themselves well at interviews or networking events are just good at that sort of thing.  But the truth is anyone can make a great first impression.  This month Alison Lee Freeman will present a practical guide to brief yet memorable ways to sell the business of you.

Topics will include:

  • Defining the business of you - Know your product before you try to sell it.
  • Presenting the business of you - It is what you say AND how you say it.
  • Content - How to get past writer's block and present yourself confidently on paper and in person.
  • Delivery - Advice on vocal technique and body language to help you make a positive impression.

Alison Lee Freeman is a consultant and a professional musician.  She has twenty years experience in service industries, retail, and information systems, managing and training staff.  She holds a Bachelor of Music in voice performance from Boston University.  Freeman performs regularly as a singer/songwriter in Maine, Massachusetts, and Newfoundland.  Her car towing chantey "Alison's Saab Story" has been played on NPR's Car Talk and recently received honorable mention in the folk category of the Songwriters' Association of Washington's annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest.

You will learn how to show the world you are good at what you do in less than 30 seconds.  Because it is what you say AND how you say it content and delivery will be discussed.  To take the fear out of creating and presenting your elevator speech you will get advice on how to get past both writer's block and performance anxiety.
